the client
As a graphic designer I always start by diving deep into my client's story. For Verbeek Interieur, a local carpenter near Leuven, I wanted to understand not only their work but also their values and aesthetic. Through discussions with the owner, I learned that Verbeek's work emphasizes precision, craftsmanship, and a commitment to quality materials, often with a clean, modern style. This information formed the foundation for my design choices.
research
I began with some research on other brands in the carpentry and interior design sector, aiming to see trends, color schemes, and typographical styles. For Verbeek, I noted that many carpentry brands utilize earthy tones and classic, bold fonts to emphasize craftsmanship and strength. I also looked at various iconic symbols of carpentry, such as tools or wood patterns, to get ideas on integrating subtle thematic elements.
ideation
With a sketchpad in hand, I explored various forms, letters, and symbols that could represent Verbeek's identity. My focus was on creating a logo that felt both modern and grounded in tradition. I played with “V” shapes and incorporated elements resembling wood grain and triangular shapes that could hint at structural stability—an essential element in carpentry. I also experimented with incorporating a small symbol above the "V" to add a unique twist, making it feel almost like a piece of crafted wood.
digital drafting
After sketching, I moved to Illustrator, where I started digitizing the most promising concepts. Here, I worked on refining the lines, adjusting proportions, and experimenting with different typefaces that would align with the logo mark. The "V" mark emerged as a prominent element, representing Verbeek's focus on interior structures and craftsmanship.
I explored color schemes, testing how the logo would look in both black-and-white and color. Since Verbeek's brand is rooted in quality craftsmanship, I tested monochromatic variations to ensure that the logo could stand alone without losing impact. Eventually, I settled on variations in black and red-orange, which would convey both a sense of strength and creativity.
prototyping
I created multiple versions, including a brand mark, a horizontal logo, and a few alternative layouts to ensure flexibility across different platforms. I designed black-and-white, inverted, and color versions, ensuring versatility for various applications—whether it be business cards, social media, or signage. I also developed a vertical brand mark that could stand alone, ideal for smaller placements.
presentation
After finalizing several options, I presented them to the client with mockups, allowing them to see the logo in context—on signage, stationery, and even digital platforms. I explained the meaning behind each element, especially the bold, structured “V,” which subtly conveys both strength and craftsmanship. The client appreciated the versatility and the way the design managed to be modern yet timeless, reflecting their own approach to carpentry.
creating brand guidelines
To ensure consistency, I created a logo manual for Verbeek, detailing usage guidelines. This included information on logo spacing, minimum sizes, color codes, and examples of correct and incorrect logo usage. The manual also covered alternative logos for digital and print to ensure that the brand identity remained strong across all media.
delivery
Finally, I exported the logo files in various formats, including .ai, .svg, and .png, and organized them into labeled folders for easy access. I delivered files in both RGB for digital use and CMYK for print to maintain color fidelity across different applications. The full package included the logo manual, main logo variations, and individual brand marks for Verbeek's future branding needs.
